    About Iliad Bespoke

ILIAD Design Bespoke creates elegant and imaginative contemporary and period-inspired furniture to the specifications of our private and design industry clients. With our experience as world-class purveyors of original furnishings from the Biedermeier, Neoclassical, and Art Deco eras with ateliers in New York and Prague, ILIAD brings an intimate understanding of historical and modern design to the repertoire.  Conceived and launched in 2001 by MFA sculptor and founder Andrea Zemel – the segue from antiques to design and from showroom to the studio was an intuitive response to industry demand.

Inspired by the idioms of Classism and Modernism, Zemel’s imagination and breadth of experience are balanced by the technical expertise and creative verve of managing director Barnaby Haughey. Blending old world craftsmanship with innovative 21st century techniques and processes, ILIAD Design conceives and produces superlative original designs for the discriminating client, bringing a level of aesthetic virtuosity and technical insight to every creation.

    The Process

ILIAD sees design as collaboration; having evolved from the practical needs of architects, collectors, and interior designers to accommodate period genre furniture to the demands of the contemporary setting, from conception through fabrication, involvement in the creative process is encouraged. Many of our unique single item production commissions look to the periods that inspire them. Priming the imagination through creative dialogue and a vast array of visual resources, years of exposure to original examples of period furniture, are complemented by our art historical reference library and detailed photographic documentation from our database of images from ILIAD’s prior collections. Tabula rasa creations are enthusiastically welcomed, while equally, existing designs from our current portfolio can be modified to suit the needs of situational requirements. Once the criteria for a prospective design is established, a number of sketches and scale drawings are rendered by hand before arriving at a final plan that is digitally rendered.

    To Your Specifications

The choice of materials including sumptuous veneers and unique hardware are often the most spectacular feature of a realized design. ILIAD devotes a great deal of care and attention to these while presenting the client with a range of options. Creating digital mock-ups for prospective designs – scale drawing are digitally overlaid with images of existing veneer flitches, stone, glass or metal, to present simulations of possible surface configurations and wood grain patterns. Details like veneer cross banding and book matched panels are explored, as are decorative elements like perimeter inlays or marquetry. Additional detailing such as metal leaf, parchments/hides, marble insets, metal trims/millwork, or hand carved accents are discussed and integrated. Customized hardware mechanisms and mounts can be chosen from our existing portfolio, or can be uniquely designed using drawings and our own 3D printer to prototype cast or hand forged designs.

    Managing Directors

    Andrea Zemel

Andrea received her MFA in Printmaking & Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania, teaching there prior to opening ILIAD Antik in 2000. With over 25 years of experience as a sculptor and artist, and 15 years experience as a premier dealer of period furniture and decorative arts, it was a natural progression for her to move from showroom back to the studio, and to enter the realm of period-inspired and contemporary furniture design.  A skilled draughtsman, Zemel’s proficient and compelling renderings give life to the design process; her in-depth understanding of the human form give her unique insights into proportion and form that are essential to both the design and nuanced scaling of a masterfully conceived piece of furniture.  A former educator, she is able to communicate process to layperson and professional alike with ease and competence; and as both purveyor and businesswoman, she is sensitive to the complex demands of the architecture and design industry and the special needs of clients.

    Barnaby Haughey

Barney has spent over five years training in our Prague atelier to learn the art of fine period furniture restoration, finishing, and construction. Third-generation in the line of a family antiques business in the U.K., Barney has worked in the industry for more than 15 years. His in-depth understanding of restoration techniques has shaped his technical insight into the design process. An expert in international logistics and fine art handling and as client liaison, he oversees every project from the start to final installation.

3D Modeling and Bespoke Hardware Design

Breaking out of the mold, Iliad’s design team has advanced its proto-type process while expanding its toolbox, turning to the latest in 3D printing technology to expand the creative palate. Substantially facilitating the collaborative dialogue in new and exciting ways, as a “think-pad” for the sculptor with every iteration of each potential design, in-house 3D modeling and 3D printing has dramatically enhanced ILIAD’s ability to both conceive and fabricate compelling furniture and imaginative hardware – rendering creative “draft” solutions in real time and real space.
